Trees peacefully swaying in the wind, birds who joyfully sing in the sunny mornings accompanied by the warm, soft rays of sun that silently shy through the clouds. These were all reasons why we made the decision to move our family from the city to country living.
We found our little country home on a small patch of land & decided our first outdoor project would be a chicken coop! Now just as many of us wives do, I went straight into Pinterest & started pinning the future project I would soon hand over to the hubby. My husband got to work shortly after and built our dream chicken coop on a classic country hillside with the help of my two older kiddos.
We purchased some French blacks, Easter eggers, olive eggers, & German bielefelders hatching eggs. We incubated them in our Harris Farms 22-Egg Capacity Nurture Right 360 Egg Incubator (which I highly recommend by how beginner friendly it is). After 21 days our chicks started hatching & we ended up with 12 hens & 5 roosters & we love each one of them! We later decided to add 2 Opal Legbars chicks (the white hens) because they lay blue turquoise eggs, which I just couldn’t resist.
My daughter is the main caregiver for the chickens! She enjoys taking care of them & loves collecting the eggs, as well as playing with our young roos! But, as with everything, there are many responsibilities that come with being a chicken mom. Filling up the food/water, cleaning out the coop, the list is almost endless! But that doesn’t make it boring or tiresome; if it was up to my daughter we’d have a full farm complete with her own herd of horses.
I’ve already created my next pinboard for my husband’s next project but shhh don’t tell him he still doesn’t know about it. I mean, what type of homestead can go without a garden!? Seasonal, organic, homegrown crops that we’ll feel proud of every time we harvest them (and eat them!!).
Now, it’s time to speak about the elephant in the room… yes the elephant, not the crazy chickens running around the yard. Where have I been these last couple of years? & why have I not been actively offering photo sessions these last couple years? Doing what I love & what brings me life!? Well, due to some unforeseen health challenges I was unable to continue with my photography for the last couple of years, but I’m here to say I will be back & booking regular sessions soon! I even have a wedding lined up in the books already later on this year. I will keep you all posted for regular session bookings through my emails and social media so keep an eye out because in all honesty, I’ve missed you all so so much! I hope to see you soon!
